Excerpts of Bebe Miller Company’s community symposium on Dance Fort
There is often perceived this hierarchy of director, choreographer, designers, dramaturg, and then there is the dancing body, but we all know (those of us who are in this field) that it is through these bodies that we see any idea. – Bebe Miller speaking about her work with collaborators Angie Hauser and Darrell Jones
Angie Hauser’s proposal is important because this is where the two ideas beginning to overlap. The idea of building an archive and the idea of making a dance. She really wanted to document the external/internal story that is built into her approaches inside of the dance. – Talvin Wilks talking about Angie Hauser’s contributions to the making of Dance Fort
We knew that there was so much of the process that happens outside of the pieces themselves. Might there be away to make that visible to an audience? -Bebe Miller answering ‘why a digital archive?’
Looking at the information, that dancers who collaborate in the process carry, that is not necessarily documented or acknowledged. That notion of ‘what is that archive they carry in their body?’ How do we understand this and go back over a particular history to collect that information? What is the proper way to think about that, document that? How can it be living and accessible? That was a very important component of the notion of a collaborative archive. What we all contribute to the making of the work. –Talvin Wilks answering ‘why a digital archive?’
